Cemeteries
All current Johnson County cemeteries presented here were researched, photographed, and indexed between 2005 and 2010 for the Digital Cemetery Project and are continually updated and corrected. The Digital Cemetery Project was hosted and curated by the Johnson County Library on the Johnson County History site for many years, however, they are no longer able to host the site. I am in the (slow) process of uploading the 30,000+ photos to this website to enable public research and genealogical use.
Ten burial grounds included in this list were lost over time. These lost burial grounds were documented in land deeds, early records, and/or marked on early Atlas maps. Contact me if you have any information about these lost burial grounds or the families that lived on these lands.
This list also contains a monument marking a horse cemetery for the locally bred and trained winner of the 64th running of the Kentucky Derby and his sire!
The following articles and papers are included for those with an interest in history and what we can learn from cemeteries: The History of Captain's Creek Community, The Pioneer Spirit Remains: Fuller Cemetery, Cemetery War Memorials, Family Mausolea of Johnson County Kansas.
I hope you will find some long-lost ancestors here and that these photos will help you find and connect to your past and learn about the early history of Johnson County, Kansas.
