Missions

There were 3 missions established in what is now Johnson County. Each mission established a church or meeting house and provided religious instruction, classroom instruction, and instruction in agriculture, husbandry, cooking, sewing, and homemaking.

1831 - Baptist Mission established

1837 - Friends (Quaker) Mission established

1839 - Methodist Mission established.

Note: The Methodist Mission was first established in 1830 in the Turner area of Wyandotte Co. The Mission was moved to its present location in 1839, and the Manual Labor School and Methodist Church was established.

• 1843-57 Shawnee Marriages The Methodist missionaries began to serve the Shawnee tribe within 10 years of their arrival to the Shawnee Reservation. While many of the Shawnee had family units according to their own customs, the Methodists encouraged them to have an additional Christian marriage.
