Four Corners Cemetery, est. 1879

About the Cemetery

29 Oct 2005

The sign, barely viewable on the western edge of an island of dense tree growth, reads Mount Pleasant "Four Corners" Burying Grounds Est. 1879. Mount Pleasant was an early community that later was known by the Four Corners at its heart. Two acres of land for this cemetery was given to the Mount Pleasant Burying Ground and Meeting House. The Christian Church Meeting House was located on one of the Four Corners about .5 miles south of the cemetery. According to the plat books and deeds, the cemetery land was first patented from the State of Kansas to JF and CO Ridlon. JF and CO Ridlon deeded 2 acres to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association, however, there are burials that precede the deed. The cemetery entrance was removed and farmed, and the cemetery is completely covered in dense new tree growth and in a dangerous condition. During my exploration of this cemetery, I found 8 obvious stones, and 9 indications of graves where the stone is now broken, missing, or almost completely buried. I wrote to the Township, the land owner, and neighbors to bring attention to this cemetery.

This cemetery contains many of William Easdale's family and is the story of the loss of many children in these hard times.

When I visited the cemetery, I was awestruck and brought to tears. Thanks to the tremendous efforts and donations of many individuals in the community, descendants of the interred, local companies, Scouts, and the McCamish Township government, this cemetery was completely cleared, cleaned, and resurrected! I understand this effort began before 2019 and appears to have been completed in 2021. The original entrance to the cemetery was rebuilt, marble fence posts with plaques mark off the cemetery boundaries, a very nice fence and entry arch was installed, a new granite monument was installed to replace the old original wooden sign,  and the very dense tree cover was removed and replaced with grass. Gravestones were recovered,  uprighted, repaired, cleaned, and reset. Lots of white wooden crosses mark otherwise unmarked graves. Many plaques are installed throughout the cemetery, acknowledging those who donated labor, materials, and funding to this monumental effort. My heartfelt kudos go out to these volunteers. What a job well done and a source of pride to the Four Corners community! The photos at the bottom of this page show how beautiful this cemetery is in 2025. The transcriptions below have been updated with new information, new stones uncovered, and photos of this beautiful cemetery and sparkling gravestones.
