Shawnee Marriages 1843 - 1857

This collection represents the first and earliest marriages in the Shawnee Reservation, Indian Territory, later to become Johnson County in Territorial Kansas. The Methodist missionaries began to serve the Shawnee tribe within 10 years of their arrival at the Shawnee Reservation. While many of the Shawnee had family units according to Shawnee customs, the Methodists encouraged them to have an additional Christian marriage.
